A documentary about periods won a 2019 Oscar—and the filmmakers made the best acceptance speech

A documentary about menstruation just won an Oscar. Period. End of Sentence took home the win for Best Documentary – Short at the 91st annual Academy Awards on February 24th, and director Rayka Zehtabchi and producer Melissa Berton deserve a separate Oscar for their acceptance speeches alone. “I’m not crying because I’m on my period or anything,” an emotional Zehtabchi told the crowd. “I can’t believe a film about menstruation just won an Oscar.”

Berton then chimed in with an inspiring tidbit, saying, “A period should end a sentence, not a girl’s education.”

Period. End of Sentence, a Netflix original, explores the stigma surrounding menstruation in a rural village outside of Delhi, India. The documentary follows a group of Indian women who learn to manufacture sanitary pads to fight the stigma.
