Pepperidge Farm and Trader Joe’s are locked in a legal battle over cookies

Things in the cookie community are getting serious, you guys. Specifically, there’s a big battle going on right now between cookie company Pepperidge Farm and grocery store Trader Joe’s. The dispute? A particular Trader Joe’s product called “Crispy Cookies” that Pepperidge Farm feels bears and awfully close resemblance to their “Milanos.”

If you’re not a cookie connoisseur, then let me explain what we’re dealing with. Milanos are oval-shaped cookie sandwiches with a thin chocolate layer inside. Crispy Cookies, while not oval, have the same kind of idea: two cookies filled with chocolate. I mean, it’s a great idea. Cookies and chocolate go together like peanut butter and jelly, so it makes sense that more than one company would have the idea.

However, Pepperidge Farm is peeved. Their official complaint reads, “Trader Joe’s has willfully sought to trade on Pepperidge Farm’s reputation and the reputation of the Milano cookies.” Yikes. They also claim that they notified Trader Joe’s of the infringement back in August. Four months or so later, and it’s time to take it to the next level. Pepperidge Farm wants to remove this product from Trader Joe’s shelves, as well as seek damages A.K.A probably get a little $$$.

This is all officially going down in Connecticut federal district court, and Trader Joe’s has refused to comment on any pending litigation. It’s unclear when the two companies will come to an agreement, but we hope that won’t mean taking any cookies from this world, because
