People think Taylor Swift is launching her own streaming service, and here’s why

After making a series of trademarks, people have started to speculate that Taylor Swift is launching her own streaming service.

At the moment, Taylor Swift is currently hard at work on the followup to her record breaking 1989 album, which is expected for release later this year (in fact, according to TayTay’s BFF Ed Sheeran, the album could be coming in December!). What’s more, she’s just fresh off her duet with Zayn Malik, “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” which was taken from the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack, and gave the singer her most recent Billboard Hot 100 Top 10.

Despite usually remaining quiet in the run up to the release of her albums, yesterday (March 15th) TMZ reported that Taylor Swift had begun to start trademarking stuff, something she’s been known to do in the past, especially surrounding the lyrics from her last album, 1989.

According TMZ, TayTay filed documents yesterday requesting the trademark for the term “Swifties.”

Why we hear you ask? Well, TMZ reports that the documents filed were in order to give Taylor the right to brand a website “featuring non-downloadable multi-media content in the nature of audio recordings.”

As multiple outlets have suggested, that sounds a lot like a streaming service to us…

Currently, Apple Music is the only service that holds the rights to stream Taylor Swift’s music. The singer has famously been embroiled in a battle with Spotify over it’s freemium tier, suggesting that it devalues music by essentially offering it for free (Taylor’s music is, however, still available to play on YouTube).

Despite the rumor mill going into overdrive that Taylor might be about to enter into the music tech buisness, Gossip Cop has suggested that the reports are all baloney. Instead, they suggest, Tay actually trademarked the term “Swifties” in order to launch “a line of music products, including guitars, guitar picks, guitar straps and drumsticks,” while also “organizing retreats, educational camps and self-guided online courses.”

Hmmm…we’re not quite sure what to make of all this. While Gossip Cop said that Taylor has not plans for a streaming service, TMZ seems pretty adamant that she does.

However, we do like the idea of a Taylor Swift music camp where we play guitar, write songs, and get down to a sick beat. And, Gossip Cop also teased that Team Taylor did have something up its sleeves for Swifties all around the world. Maybe that new album is coming sooner than we thought?

C’mon Taylor, give us a hint!
