Penélope Cruz — *not* Lady Gaga — is officially on board for “American Crime Story: Versace”
Ryan Murphy, aka the reigning king of FX lately, has just cast Penélope Cruz to play Donatella Versace in the next season of American Crime Story.
Not that Ryan Murphy hasn’t been racking up quite the resume. And not that his shows haven’t been garnering lots of accolades over the years. And also not that TV isn’t increasingly a place that big names look to call home…but Penelope Cruz, even still, sounds like a pretty big get. The Pirates of the Caribbean actress isn’t just a name we know, she’s also an Oscar winner for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2009.
This time, she’ll be playing the sister of murdered fashion designer Gianni Versace, which we imagine gives her a fairly central role.
The previous season of the anthology series covered O.J. Simpson in The People vs. O.J. Simpson, which everybody with a pulse has seen. The Versace edition (this sounds like a new fashion line, but nope, television) is expected to air in 2018, although we don’t have a specific air date, nor many details, just yet.
The mini-series will be based on the book Vulgar Favors by Maureen Orth, so if you’re feeling impatient about that nebulous premiere date, def go find yourself a copy ASAP. Ryan Murphy definitely has a stable of actors and actresses he likes to reuse, and all of them are good, so we can’t wait to hear further casting and plot news from this highly anticipated season of television.
