Pee-wee Herman has a new gig and it’s perfect
Paul Reubens is already making a grand return to our lives as Pee-wee Herman in an original Netflix movie set for next year. Now how about before that happens, he stops by our television screens for a perfect role on Fox’s Gotham? At New York Comic Con over the weekend, the Fox Batman-prequel show made one very big announcement: Reubens has been cast to play the Penguin’s dad!
This is some pretty amazing stuff. Gotham is all about how Gotham became the Gotham we know and love (and are sometimes scared of) today, and that includes introducing all sorts of pre-Batman foes. One of them happens to be Oswald “Penguin” Cobblepot, played by Robin Lord Taylor. We’ve already met Cobblepot’s mom before, and she’s played perfectly by Carol Kane. As for his dad? PEE-WEE.
Taylor was the one to break the news at NYCC, and could barely contain his excitement. He first teased that Reubens will be “showing up very soon” before completely fan-penguin-ing out with, “Pee-Wee Herman is playing my dad! What the hell? Oh my god!”
We’re just as excited. This also isn’t the first time Reubens has played the Penguin’s dad before. In Tim Burton’s 1992 Batman Returns, Reubens played the same exact role, but that time his son was Danny DeVito. Now, it’s Taylor, and gotta say, totally see some family resemblance there. Spot-on casting, Gotham.
No word on when exactly Reubens will make his entrance as Penguin’s dad, other than “soon.” Soon gives you enough time to binge every episode of Gotham up to this point, so you’re totally prepared for this big Pee-wee entrance.
