Paul Simon opens up about ex-wife Carrie Fisher’s death, and we’ve got so many feels

The public in general has been mourning the loss of Carrie Fisher, but one famous musician just took the sadness to a whole new level. Legendary artist Paul Simon wrote about Fisher’s death on Twitter. Even though his message was brief, when you consider that Simon was extremely close to Fisher for many years as her romantic partner, you’ll understand how packed with emotions his words are.

Many celebrities have already expressed their sadness at Fisher’s passing, but knowing Simon and Fisher’s complicated past makes his message all the harder to read. On December 28th — less than a day after Fisher died at age 60 from complications from a heart attack — the musician’s Twitter account quoted Simon directly when it tweeted:

"Yesterday was a horrible day. Carrie was a special, wonderful girl. It's too soon."

In her HBO special Wishful Drinking, Fisher said, “Every so often, you meet a magic person and that is how I felt when I met Paul.”

They had met on the set of Star Wars and dated for five years before their marriage. However, their relationship was tumultuous and they had actually broken up weeks before they decided to get married.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Fisher and Simon married on August 16th, 1983, when she was 26 years old and he was 41. The wedding was low-key, but the guest list included Fisher’s divorced and famous parents Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels (Simon was the second host on SNL after all), Star Wars creator George Lucas (Fisher was Princess Leia after all), Simon’s former bandmate Art Garfunkel and his partner Penny Marshall, and Billy Joel and his partner Christie Brinkley.

Fisher and Simon’s marriage didn’t last long with them separating after only 11 months. Yet, People magazine noted that in the Simon biography Homeward Bound: The Life of Paul Simon, Peter Ames Carlin wrote that they continued to date and live together for years after their divorce. After 12 years of being together on and off, it was officially over, but their relationship had lasted through Fisher’s struggles with mental health and addiction — as well as Simon’s own depression.

So when Simon wrote, “Yesterday was a horrible day,” he truly meant it. Although they have not been romantically linked for over two decades — and he has been married to Edie Brickell since 1992 and Fisher had her daughter Billie Lourd with Bryan Lourd — that doesn’t change the times — good and bad — that Fisher and he shared.

If this tweet leaves you wanting for more thoughts on Fisher from Simon, you can listen to the songs he wrote about her, including “She Moves On,” which Fisher said was about the end of their relationship.

As we continue to mourn Fisher, we send our thoughts to those who she was closest to, including Simon.
