After a shocking episode of “Grey’s Anatomy,” Patrick Dempsey talks about a decade of playing McDreamy

SPOILER ALERT, SPOILER ALERT, SPOILER ALERT!!!

If you don’t want to be spoiled re: this past Thursday’s ep of “Grey’s Anatomy,” STOP READING NOW.

All right, everyone who is still here, I’m assuming you all know the very sad news: McDreamy is no more. In this past week’s episode of Grey’s, the McDreams went the way of so many of our Seattle Grace/Seattle Grace Mercy West/Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital doctors (Mark! George! Denny! Little Grey! The rest of the Greys!) and met his untimely death. “Grey’s” has been on for ten years now, and we’ve seen some shocking deaths on the show in our day, but this week Shonda delivered the most shocking death in the series’ history.

Patrick Dempsey recently sat down with EW to talk about his decade on the show. Here are our favorite moments from the interview:

On finding out about McDreamy’s death

“It just sort of evolved. It’s just kind of happened. It really was something that was kind of surprising that unfolded, and it just naturally came to be. Which was pretty good. I like the way it has all played out.

It was just a natural progression with the way the story was unfolding. It was like, Okay! This was obviously the right time.”

How the role changed his life

“The energy would change when you went into a room. It was like,Oh they are talking about me. It was wild. Wild.

…You go from trying to get in a room to audition for something to suddenly everybody in the world knowing you, no matter where you go. And it happened withion a 30-day period. I’m glad I had the experience to handle it, because it’s very heady.”

His favorite moment working on the show

“The pilot was great. The pilot is the first time I watched it, and I couldn’t believe how it came together, and the emotional impact it had on the show. Everybody had these great moments. You realize how powerful an ensemble can be, and it was that collective that made it successful. Not just one individual. ”

What it was like being the McDreamy to Ellen Pompeo’s “Pick me, choose me, love me” Meredith Grey

(Note: Apparently this was the one time Dempsey teared up in the interview)

It was magic. It’s beautiful. We’re like a married couple. It’s 10 years, and it was magic from the beginning. Chemistry right away.

Goodbye, McDreamy! You are our #1 fictional doctor crush forever!!!
