Hey, party people — “Party of Five” is coming back, on Freeform

Add another reboot to your must-see roster, because this one sounds especially great. That’s right, party people, we’re talking Party of Five!

Party of Five ran on Fox from 1994 through 2000. It followed five siblings, the Salingers, who have to learn to survive after their parents die in a car accident. The original creators, Chris Keyser and Amy Lippman, have signed on to reboot the series for Freeform and got a put pilot commitment from the network.

While a put pilot isn’t a commitment commitment, it does mean that if the network doesn’t decide to move forward with the project, there’s some financial comeuppance, so they must feel pretty confident in the project. And if they feel confident, then we feel confident.

The reboot, however, will be unlike the original in that it will have a very topical twist: Instead of the Salingers dying in a car crash, the Buendias siblings’ parents are unexpectedly deported to Mexico, forcing them to figure things out on their own.

Considering the current conversation surrounding immigration, this show sounds like it could be a really powerful political commentary. And since Freeform has been delighting us with shows like The Bold Type lately — and will continue to, as Bold Type was recently renewed for *two* more seasons — we’re super excited to see what they have in mind for Party of Five.

And while the original creators will write and produce, there are some new additions to the team as well.

Michal Zebede, who wrote for both Castle and Devious Maids, will write and co-executive produce. Rodrigo Garcia will executive produce and direct. In the past, he directed shows such as The Affair, Six Feet Under, and The Sopranos.

Basically, it sounds like an amazing premise and a dream team, giving us even more reason to be excited — as if we weren’t totally excited about Party of Five coming back already.
