This Oscar nominee will not be permitted to attend the ceremony due to the Muslim travel ban

Things are starting to get real. President Donald Trump announced a Muslim ban on nationals from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen for the next four months, and an indefinite ban on those hailing from Syria. The ban would prevent many from entering the U.S., even if they have valid visas, including Oscar nominee and Iranian director Asghar Farhadi.

Farhadi’s film The Salesman tells of a high school teacher who seeks revenge against the perpetrator who attacked his wife, and is nominated for ‘Best Foreign Language Film.’

Trump’s Muslim ban would stop Farhadi from traveling to the U.S. for the Oscars.

But, this isn’t the first time Farhadi’s work has been recognized by the Academy. His earlier film,  A Separation, was the first Iranian film to take home an Oscar in 2012.

Learning from last year’s #OscarsSoWhite controversy, the awards show is taking a great leap to true inclusion. But Trump’s recent ban seems to go in completely the opposite direction.

One of the stars of The Salesman, Taraneh Alidoosti, is just one amongst the many celebs who are fed up with Trump and his racist rhetoric. And because of it, the Iranian actress announced that she would boycott the upcoming ceremony. false

The Academy has yet to make a statement on the situation, but while they’re not responsible for the policies of Trump’s government, they do have a platform to speak out against the Islamophobic ban. Let’s hope we can count on Hollywood to use their biggest night of the year to speak up for human rights.
