Oprah opened up about why she and Stedman never married, and #RESPECT
It’s safe to say that we’d trust Oprah Winfrey with advice about literally anything. Even marriage. The media powerhouse just revealed why she never married Stedman Graham, and in true Oprah fashion, her views on marriage and relationships are flawless.
Though they’ve been in a committed relationship for more than 30 years (!!), Oprah just got refreshingly real about why she never wed Stedman, and we fully respect and understand her take on marriage and why it’s not for her.
In a new interview with Vogue, Oprah had one thing to say about the societal pressure on women to get married: “Live life on your own terms.”
Oprah has been in a relationship with Stedman since 1986, but says the topic of marriage rarely ever came up between them.
"Nobody believes it, but it’s true. The only time I brought it up was when I said to Stedman, ‘What would have happened if we had actually gotten married?’ And the answer is: ‘We wouldn’t be together.’" She added: "We would not have stayed together, because marriage requires a different way of being in this world. His interpretation of what it means to be a husband and what it would mean for me to be a wife would have been pretty traditional, and I would not have been able to fit into that."
Her words are a great reminder that just because societal norms dictate that a long-term couple should tie the knot, doesn’t mean marriage is the be-all and end-all to a successful, happy relationship. We totally respect that Oprah and Stedman never caved in to pressure to marry and have children if they were happier doing things on their own terms. Yet another reason why Oprah is the queen of the universe.
