1D covers Natalia Imbruglia’s ‘Torn,’ because nostalgia

BBC‘s Radio 1 Live Lounge is responsible for some of our favorite covers of all time. From Ed Sheeran’s version of “Take Me To Church,” to Taylor Swift’s cover of “Riptide,” to Disclosure and Sam Smith’s play on “Hotline Bling”: Many of music’s best have dropped by the studio to give their personal twist on the latest hits, and the world is all the better for it.

Earlier this week, One Direction stopped by Live Lounge to play a few songs from their new album, Made in the A.M., and, true to fashion, ended up breaking out a couple covers of their own. Most notably, the boy band decided to cover Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn” — the first song they ever sang together as a group back on X-Factor.

The cover was bittersweet, as it was the first time they’ve covered it since the show finale five years ago, and the first time they’ve covered it without Zayn Malik, who left the group earlier this year. Nonetheless, it’s pretty interesting to see how much the group has grown up since — and just like the first time on X-Factor, they definitely made the angsty ’90s hit their own.

In case you’re not feeling the nostalgia and want something a little more modern, One Direction also took a stab at the Rihanna, Kanye West, and Paul McCartney collab, “FourFiveSeconds,” during their session. The resulting tune feels like something sung around a campfire (assuming you have a couple violinists amongst you), and Harry, Liam, Louis, and Niall definitely give it their all.
