OMG a ‘Hocus Pocus’ sequel would be the best thing ever
Calling all sistahs. Just because there’s never been a real conversation about a possible sequel to 1993’s classic Hocus Pocus, doesn’t mean we can’t casually ask Bette Midler about it when given the opportunity. And that’s exactly what happened.
During a recent Reddit AMA interview, Midler was asked — repeatedly — about the possibility of a Hocus Pocus sequel, the original will of course always have a fond place in our childhood Halloween hearts. Midler went on to explain that a sequel is not her decision (though, let’s agree it should be) and that it’s completely up to the Walt Disney Company. But in that same breath, she mentioned that she and the other “girls” would be down to do it. The other girls being her two sistahs in the movie, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. When Nijimy got wind of this conversation, she tweeted:
She followed that tweet up saying:
Deep breaths. This is all happening so fast, and really it’s the best post-Halloween gift any of us could have hoped for.
Hocus Pocus has become a cult classic over the years, and a movie that requires a re-watch every Halloween. Yes, it’s a little bit scary (but that was just when we were kids . . . wink, wink) and for a refresher course it focuses on the three Sanderson sistahs, Winifred (Midler), Sarah (SPJ), and Mary (Nijimy). The power group is on a quest to absorb the spirits of children in order to stay eternally youthful. After their plot is discovered by a young boy named Thackery Binx in 1693, they turn him into a cat and cast a spell stating that they’ll return on All Hallow’s Eve when a virgin lights their black-flame candle.
Fast forward 300 years and it’s up to Binx — who’s still a black cat — and his new friends in 1993 to stop the sisters from claiming any more children’s souls. Thankfully, Binx and co. succeed, but not until after a show stopping musical number from the sistahs.
The possibility of a sequel is filling our Hocus Pocus hearts with so much joy. As Ms. Midler said in her AMA, “You have to go send in your cards to the Walt Disney company. The ball’s in their court.” Time to get writing.
