Omarosa is officially leaving the White House after less than a year

It was officially announced today, December 13th, that Omarosa Manigault Newman will be leaving the White House after less than a year of service. Omarosa, as she is most commonly known, was a senior aide to President Donald Trump, and was also one of his most loyal supporters. So naturally, her departure is causing a stir.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters, “Omarosa Manigault Newman resigned yesterday to pursue other opportunities. Her departure will not be effective until January 20, 2018. We wish her the best in future endeavors and are grateful for her service.”

Omarosa’s position in the White House has been surrounded by controversy since it was announced she’d be joining the president’s staff back in January. When she was hired, she was widely known by the American public as a former Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice contestant. Although she was “fired” from Celebrity Apprentice after several controversial outbursts, Omarosa and Trump collaborated again in 2010 on their reality show, The Merger. It was announced that the reality star would be joining Trump’s staff shortly after the 2016 presidential election.

Omorosa’s duties in the White House were never entirely clear. When she was hired, her specific title was Assistant to the President and Director of Communications for the Office of Public Liaison. She allegedly worked as Trump’s chief adviser on African American issues, and worked on outreach to historically black colleges and universities, as well as on racial disparities in the military justice system. It’s also known that she earned $179,700 a year, which is the highest salary allowed by law for a White House aid.

Some sources have stated that she clashed with White House Chief of Staff John Kelly. In September, reports surfaced that Omarosa consistently attended White House meetings she was not invited to, and that Kelly was regularly forced to block her from them.

At this point in time, many are speculating that Omarosa was actually dismissed from her position and that the White House is merely framing it as a resignation, but there is no way to verify that at this time.

It is currently unknown who will take her place.
