Ocean’s 8 crushed expectations at the box office this weekend, and duh

Ever since we learned that the Ocean’s franchise was getting a reboot with not one, not two, but eight badass female leads, we’ve been enamored. We’ve watched the trailer. We’ve read everything we could about the stars’ behind-the-scenes friendships. And now, after months of waiting, Ocean’s 8 is finally here — and it’s stealing the show at the box office.

After raking in about $41.5 million domestically this weekend, Ocean’s 8 displaced Solo from the top box office position and also finished ahead of Deadpool 2. It earned an additional $12.2 million overseas, bringing its total earnings to about $53.7 million. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it had one of the top 10 openings this year so far. With a budget of $70 million, the movie is well on its way to turning a profit. Even more exciting? Women helped drive the film’s success, with THR noting that almost 70% of audience members were female.

The movie even did slightly better than the studio expected.

"We thought we'd come in in the $35-40 (million) range," Warner Bros. distribution chief Jeff Goldstein told ABC News. "Number one, it's fun. Number two, it hits an underserved audience. Unfortunately, there is just a lack of stories that are aimed right at women."

The movie currently has a 68% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ rating on CinemaScore, meaning audiences are leaving satisfied. Ocean’s 8’s success goes to further prove that the demand for quality, female-led films is high (as much as certain factions in the industry may try to deny it).

Congratulations to everyone involved in the movie-making process for this film. And Hollywood, we hope you’re paying attention.
