Wow, Mark Hamill sure brings up Obi-Wan a lot in this new interview, hint hint

Since Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theaters in December 2015, fans have been theorizing about Rey’s parentage and family history — a big theory being that Rey is related to Obi-Wan Kenobi, and that she might just be his granddaughter.

It’s interesting, then, that Mark Hamill should bring up the mentor to his character — none other than Luke Skywalker — a number of times in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly about Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Hamill spoke of the investment that Obi-Wan had in Luke, and how Luke similarly invested so much in Kylo Ren.

But that, of course, didn’t work out too well.

“[Luke] made a huge mistake in thinking that his nephew was the chosen one, so he invested everything he had in Kylo, much like Obi-Wan did with my character, Hamill told EW. “And he is betrayed, with tragic consequences. Luke feels responsible for that.

“That’s the primary obstacle he has to rejoining the world and his place in the Jedi hierarchy, you know? It’s that guilt, that feeling that it’s his fault, that he didn’t detect the darkness in him until it was too late.”

He also spoke about how Luke probably wishes he could be the person that Obi-Wan believed he could be.

For what it’s worth, we think that he can!

“I think he probably looks out on the horizon and wishes that he could be more effective, could be what Obi-Wan wanted him to be, Hamill added. “But life is imperfect and without conflict there is no drama. Believe me, you’re going to see a lot of conflict in The Last Jedi. That is for sure.

We don’t have a doubt about that.

Now, there’s nothing concrete here to suggest that Obi-Wan is in fact related to Rey. But this could add fuel to that fire, right? You know, since Obi-Wan is still at the forefront of Hamill’s — and Luke’s! — mind, and is clearly still important in some capacity.

At the very least, this could suggest that Obi-Wan has some sort of big role, possibly as an influence or inspiration, for Luke and Rey. In any case, we think it’s safe to say yes, he’ll have some sort of presence.

But we’ll find out what the deal is with Obi-Wan when Star Wars: The Last Jedi lands in theaters on December 15th. And in the meantime, we’ll continue to theorize…
