Obama gets emotional about Malia starting college, is all of our dads.

President Obama pulled on our heartstrings when he got a little misty eyed while giving a speech at Macomb County Community College in Warren, Michigan on Wednesday, thinking about how his oldest daughter Malia will be heading off to college in fall of 2016.

“Just yesterday, Malia started her first day of senior year. You know, I was sitting in her room because I was going to see her off her first day of school,” Obama said. “She puts her head on my shoulder and she says, ‘Daddy, you know, you realize this is probably going to be the last time that you ever send me off for my first day of school.”

Oh man, just reading that made us tear up a little (OK fine, like, a lot). During his speech, the President jokes that he had to look away so he wouldn’t be a crybaby. Obama says he’s pretty sure he and Michelle are way too young to have daughters going to college —which is probably something all of us have heard once twice from our own parents. He quickly slips back into Presidential mode, talking to the crowd about the real issue: his recent announcement that he plans to make two years of community college free and universal in America.

As for Malia, it has been reported that the future filmmaker has already toured campuses including Stanford and Berkley along with NYU and Columbia. With early acceptance letters coming in the next few months, we’ll likely know where she plans to go soon! In the meantime, it’s OK to cry it out, President Obama!
