Watch President Obama lead a soul-stirring rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’

On Friday, President Barack Obama spoke at the funeral of Rev. Clementa Pinckney, the pastor and state senator who was killed last week in a shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

Rev. Clementa Pinckney was one of nine victims of a heartbreaking and terrible hate crime — but rather than focus on anger towards the shooter, at the end of his eulogy, President Obama began a deeply moving rendition of “Amazing Grace.” The congregation rose to their feet to join him.

The song was a powerful memorial for the lives lost last Wednesday — and President Obama made sure we remembered each and every one one of their names.

“Clementa Pinckney found that grace,” the President said. “Cynthia Hurd found that grace. Susie Jackson found that grace. Ethel Lance found that grace. DePayne Middleton-Doctor found that grace. Tywanza Sanders found that grace. Daniel L. Simmons Sr. found that grace. Sharonda Singleton found that grace. Myra Thompson found that grace.”

“Through the example of their lives, they now pass it on to us,” he continued. “May we find ourselves worthy of that precious and extraordinary gift as long as our lives endure. May grace now lead them home.”
