And Now Lana Del Rey Takes On Feminism (Sort Of)
Yes, we’re talking a lot about feminism these days, on and off the internet. The thing is, the reason we need to keep talking about it is because so many people don’t actually know what the word means. The dictionary (you know, that place where you find out what words you don’t know actually mean) defines feminism as “the belief that men and women should have equal rights.” That’s it, the whole shebang in one easy sentence. That’s why it’s so frustrating when our absolutely favorite famous people, keep misunderstanding the concept of feminism.
The latest in “Female Celebrities Failing To Grasp That They In Fact Are Amazing Feminists” comes from Lana Del Rey who told Fader that she was “bored” with feminism. Here, let me let the singer speak for herself:
“For me, the issue of feminism is just not an interesting concept. . . Whenever people bring up feminism, I’m like, god. I’m just not really that interested….I’m more interested in, you know, SpaceX and Tesla, what’s going to happen with our intergalactic possibilities.”
The thing is, in order to even understand those concepts, you have to have access to education. If you weren’t standing on the shoulders of the feminists who made education, like, a thing for women (it wasn’t girls going to school back in Ancient Greece and learning about the Socratic Method and Pythagorean Theorem, I can tell you that much) you, Lana Del Rey, would have no idea what SpaceX and Tesla was. You also wouldn’t be allowed to participate in anything having to do with intergalactic possibilities. If you’re interested in being a women who has an equal opportunity to participate in intellectual matter, then yes, you actually ARE interested in feminism.
Del Rey also went on to define “a true feminist” as “a woman who feels free enough to do whatever she wants.”
Yes. Exactly. So you do get what it means. And you, as a powerful woman, get to do whatever you want because of feminism, and you have positively influenced a lot of women through your work. I think you’re probably very interested in the freedoms feminism has afforded you. So let’s give a little more respect to the word. It absolutely deserves it.
