Non-Travel Blogs That Will Inspire You
Travel blogs are great. It should come as no surprise that most of my favorite must-read blogs are the musings of fellow adventurers. You can find practical advice (pack a rubber doorstop if you’re going to be traveling alone or staying in sketchy accommodations), encouragement and, in the tougher moments, commiseration. You’ll get insider tips on the best places to eat/stay/see, whether you’re visiting a major city or want to explore off the main tourist tracks. There are blogs about solo women travelers and traveling as a couple and traveling with kids. You can follow around-the-world journeys or weekend travel warriors. I’ve even profiled a few of my favorite travel bloggers here and here. The options are endless.
But there are other (non-travel) blogs that inspire and excite me, too. They give me a new perspective — encouraging me to seek out new experiences, to travel far but also to appreciate where I am. I get different things from each of these blogs. Sometimes they enable my wanderlust; sometimes they make me want to put down roots so I can buy a cottage and go antiquing. And sometimes they just make me smile. Travel doesn’t always have to involve airports or car rides or miles logged, sometimes the best get-aways are in our minds and on our computer screens.
The Londoner:
London has a special place in my heart, and reading about the newest restaurants and clubs (not to mention the posh parties), with Rosie as my guide, brings back fond memories of my time there. The photos are gorgeous, and whether Rosie is heading to a roller rink in Kings Cross or jetting off to the Greek Isles, The Londoner provides my daily dose of escapism. Also, that Custard is pretty darn cute.
Classy Girls Wear Pearls:
Even though I grew up a few hours from the seaside, I’ve always loved the ocean and been keen for all things beachy. So for my fix of preppy/nautical fashion inspiration, I depend on Sarah Vickers and her amazing blog. This photo-heavy website is like a love letter to coastal New England living. I swear, sometimes I think I can smell the salty sea air just by looking at her amazing photos. And her outfits are the cutest! Think stripes and boat shoes and chic rope bracelets.
Yes and Yes:
I recently discovered this blog, and the thing I like about it is that it’s a little bit of everything. Looking for travel inspiration? Check out the mini travel guides. Looking for life advice? Cool links? A cat calendar? Sarah’s got you covered. I feel like I haven’t even scratched the surface of everything on the site yet. Looks like I’ve got a lot of reading to do.
Young House Love:
Remember when I mentioned that there was a blog that makes me want to settle down, buy a house, and start decorating? Well, this is that blog. I’ve been a faithful reader of this DIY home/design blog, despite the fact that I don’t own a home and I’m not particularly handy. While I love following the design projects of this husband-and-wife team, the reason I keep coming back is because of the personalities of John and Sherry (and because I can’t resist a good pun or a clever post title). John and Sherry’s conversational writing style makes you feel like you stopped by to chat with friends. So check them out (no house of your own required).
