Here’s what Noma Dumezweni has to say about people thinking she can’t play Hermione
Noma Dumezweni was only announced to play Hermione on stage in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child less than a month ago, but she’s already proved that she is perfect for the role. Not only is she a veteran stage actress who is more than capable to play our favorite smartie pants, but she’s also got Hermione’s unyielding determination and spirit. Just like Hermione had to battle all sorts of forces from the wizarding world, Dumezweni is battling the haters in our world, and she’s handling the situation with so much beautiful grace.
Dumezweni explained to The Evening Standard that she didn’t want to take the role unless she was allowed to bring her own interpretation to it, while still remaining true to the essence of Hermione Jean Granger (Weasley?). It’s exciting to hear we’re going to get a brand new version of Hermione up on the stage, but it’s been hard for Dumezweni with the “unconscious prejudice” she’s received since taking the part. And she has some words for all those people who say she can’t play Hermione.
“It stems from ignorance,” she explained. “They don’t want to be a part of the creative act. To say it’s not as it was intended is so unimaginative. I don’t think they understand how theatre works. We’re here to heal you, make you smile and whisk you away.”
“The only question we should ask is ‘Are [the actors] good?’” She continued. “I’ve met great actors black and white and I’ve met bad actors black and white.”
As for Dumezweni, with a coveted Olivier Award already to her name, we know she’s going to be a good Hermione — J.K Rowling thinks so, and Emma Watson does, too. What more could we we ask for?
