Noah Centineo opened up about getting catfished in real life
If you’ve been binging Netflix’s current wave of rom-coms, then chances are you’re well-aware of newcomer Noah Centineo, aka Peter Kavinsky from To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, and, most recently, Jamey in Sierra Burgess Is A Loser.
And if you’ve seen Sierra Burgess, then you know a major (and, honestly, problematic) element of the film is that catfishing is used as a major plot device. Basically, Sierra (played by Stranger Things and Riverdale‘s Shannon Purser) is afraid jock Jamey won’t like her for who she really is, so she gets a popular cheerleader to go on dates with him in her place—all while texting and talking on the phone with him as her true self. false
And it turns out, Centineo could draw from his life experience when playing Jamey, because a similar thing happened to him in real life. In a September 7th video interview with Young Hollywood, the actor recounted the unpleasant experience.
"I like developed, like, what I thought was an intimate relationship with someone, and we were just like talking, and—I thought—really getting to know each other, and it turned out they were not who I thought they were. I still don't know to this day who they were."
This goes without saying, but catfishing is 100% not okay and breaches trust and consent on countless levels. We’re so sorry this happened to Centineo, and we genuinely hope he’s been able to move past it. We generally love when art imitates life…but this is an exception to the rule.
Other reveals from the interview include that Centineo has had a paranormal experience (very spooky), and he’s never cried to get out of a parking ticket.
