Nike finally released those self-tying sneakers from ‘Back to the Future’

Back to the Future Day has been awesome, am I right? It’s not every Wednesday that we get to dedicate an entire 24 hours to one of everybody’s favorite movies, comparing a fictional 2015 to the one we’re currently living. As Doc Brown said in a statement this morning, “The future has finally arrived. Yes, it is different than we all thought” – as in none of us own hoverboards or flying cars or any other form of transportation that defies gravity – “but don’t worry. It just means your future hasn’t been written yet.” Dang, Doc, pull my heartstrings a little why don’t ya.

It’s true, the future is still ours to create, and one designer at Nike was so inspired by the 2015 of Back to the Future Part II that he brought one of the movie’s inventions to life, just in time for it to be delivered to Marty McFly on October 21. Today Michael J. Fox, who immortalized that puffy orange vest, shared images of himself putting on the first ever pair of self-lacing Nike shoes. They might even be more awesome than the pair in the movie.

According to this video, the sneakers go on like a normal pair, but tighten at the push of a green button. To loosen them, just press the red button. No tying necessary. Doesn’t get much more futuristic than that, my friends!
