Nicole Richie’s layered turtleneck is the one look you need to recreate this fall

There is a definite stigma surrounding turtlenecks — they’re uncool, they’re not sexy, they’re too clunky. Well, pish posh to all that. Nicole Richie is rocking a black turtleneck and convincing the naysayers that this look is 100% badass.

For an appearance on Extra, Richie wore a tight black turtleneck, a suede brown tank-dress, ankle-strap heels, her hair in a topknot, and oversized sunnies.

If one outfit could scream “Fall in Los Angeles!” this is the one to do it.

Last December, Richie told Vogue, “I like the turtleneck style and then I just layer summer dresses or even jumpsuits on top.” That’s literally what she’s giving us here.

Richie’s turtleneck is slim and ribbed, which is a lot like this one from Uniqlo ($29.90).

And this vegan suede dress by Abercrombie & Fitch ($40.80) could totally layer over the shirt.

When it comes to hair, a ponytail or topknot always looks incredibly chic and helps elongate the neck (along with the turtleneck). NYC-based stylist Daven Mayeda told InStyle last year that his favorite way to style hair with a turtleneck is a messy bun. Mayeda says to go for “undone texture and piecey-ness by spraying dry shampoo roots to ends to counteract the formality of a turtleneck.”

Richie’s topknot and bangs are kind of her ~thing~.

We also think a sleek “ballet bun” would work with this look, which leans all the way into the structured, formal nature of the turtleneck.

We’re looking forward to a never-ending summer by way of a fall season full of summer dresses over cozy knits.
