Badass Nicki Minaj broke down sexism in the music industry
The music industry, like literally every other industry, is run by men. Yes, there are a handful of powerful, incredible, strong-as-hell women in positions of power, but the truth is that the industry still has plenty of evolution to undergo before we see true equality. Laying this truth down like law is rap’s reigning queen, Nicki Minaj, who just spoke about sexism in the music industry through a series of tweets.
The whole escapade started after Nicki thanked rapper Russ, who explained how Nicki “birthed” many female musicians thanks to her style, music, career, and voice, during an interview with Tidal.

Nicki goes on to explain that women have to work twice as hard to get where men are.
They have to put in double the work, hustle twice as hard, and generally kick more butt, all while working towards their dreams. She goes on to explain how hard it is to get your name out there as a woman; how it’s no easy feat, and sometimes takes some heavy persuasion.

Nicki then talks about the double standard that so many women face. We have to work for respect, which is already afforded to men.

And Nicki also brings back a tweet that Kendrick Lamar posted seven years ago. One that’s extremely telling.

In her own tweet, Nicki says, “I’d have to wear some baggy pants n timbs for men to openly give props.” Women have to make themselves presentable to men in a way that’s 1) not threatening, and 2) adheres to their expectations, or else they won’t respect us. That’s a pretty messed up thing to realize.
Although sexism in the music industry is still there, with women like Nicki continuing to speak out and have conversations around sensitive subjects, we’ll start to finally see some change.
