Nicki Minaj dropped so much wisdom about the power of being single
Rapper Nicki Minaj is officially back on the scene after an almost four-year hiatus. After disappearing from the spotlight soon after the release of her 2014 album The Pinkprint, Minaj is hitting the ground running again with her upcoming August 8th album Queen. In her cover interview for Elle’s July issue, the “Chun-Li” rapper spoke about how Queen is her best album yet, and noted that finding herself had much to do with the quality of her current creative endeavors.
"I went through a moment where I got to know myself again, and then I went through a moment where I got to know myself as the rapper again. And then I locked [myself] in the studio and I didn’t want to leave," Minaj told Elle. "Spiritually, I’ve experienced more growth in the last six months of my life, of my career, than I have in the last eight years."
Minaj said she was able to find herself because she is on her own: “It’s the first time in my life I’ve ever been single,” she said.
The rapper explained that she’s had serious boyfriends from age 15 until just last fall when she ended her relationship with hip-hop artist Nas. Minaj told Elle that she became an entirely new woman when she learned to “sleep alone.”
"I remember feeling like I could do anything at one time in my life," Minaj said. "And somewhere along the line, I just started second guessing myself, for whatever reason. As soon as I realized that I could actually live and breathe, and eat and sleep, and walk and talk without having a boyfriend, something clicked in me."
"Becoming single," she continued, "was one of the things that made me feel strong and powerful. The fact that I am a young woman who doesn’t need a man for money. I don’t need a man for a job. I’ve never had to f-ck for beats. I’ve never had to f-ck for a record deal. I don’t have those pressures. I get up when I want, shop when I want."
We’re stoked to hear Nicki reborn when Queen drops on August 8th, 2018. We fully anticipate that the Queen of Rap will reclaim her throne.
