Get ready for more ‘Rugrats’ in your life
On the heels of a thousand other ’90s shows coming back to life through reboots and revivals, Nickelodeon is considering bringing back some of our earliest childhood friends. Soon, we could see the likes of Tommy Pickles, Chuckie, and Angelica on the small screen all over again. But, it might not be a reboot or a revival. It could be the same classic Rugrats episodes we grew up with.
Nickelodeon can most certainly sense the nostalgia in the air, and are looking at ways to bring these shows back to life. Speaking to Variety, Russell Hicks, the president of content and development at Nickelodeon, talks about the network bringing back “shows that were loved, in a fresh new way.” Loved? Oh no, we still love Rugarts, present tense, and will watch whatever Nickelodeon has in store for us.
The network isn’t thinking about rebooting or reviving any of these shows, but rather working with the episodes they already have to retool shows — so like, tweak episodes to shorten them, or merge some together to create more of a story — or even possibly make a movie or a special. “We are getting ready to bring back some of the ones they’ve told us multiple times they want to have brought back,” Hicks explained.
This sounds like a really awesome plan, and we’re behind it. But wouldn’t it be easier instead of retooling and revamping shows to, like, show simply show the old episodes? Of not only Rugrats, but maybe also Rocko’s Modern Life, Ahh! Real Monsters, CatDog, Hey Arnold, Doug, and Angry Beavers. And also then full un-touched and un-edited episodes of Alex Mack, Hey Dude, Salute Your Shorts, The Adventures of Pete and Pete, and Space Cases. And Clarissa Explains It All. Not that we’ve kept a running list of shows we want to see back on the air for the last twenty years or so.
This idea is still in the very early stages, so if this should really happen, there’s no timetable as to when it will happen. Even though nostalgia’s never going out of style, the sooner the better for us. You know you can’t get most of these shows on DVD or streaming, right? Has anyone else been trying to rewatch Hey Dude for the better part of their adult life?
