Nick Cannon said Pete Davidson called him before proposing to Ariana Grande — so this is really happening, huh?
When news broke that Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande were probably/maybe/definitely engaged, we didn’t know what to believe. We figured we’d wait for Davidson or Grande to post an Instagram confirming it, but it seems Nick Cannon has done that for them. The former America’s Got Talent host revealed that Davidson called him up before popping the question to his girlfriend.
“He called before he was going to do it, and I said, ‘Salud!’” Cannon told Entertainment Tonight. “He was really excited, so I was like, ‘I love it, man. Keep it going.’ Love is in the air!”
At first we wondered why Cannon was Davidson’s pre-engagement “call.” It’s true that one of Davidson’s first jobs in Hollywood was opening for Cannon’s own stand-up comedy sets, which led to a stint on Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ‘N Out, but we have a hunch that Davidson called his old pal because Cannon and ex-wife Mariah Carey famously tied the knot after only a few weeks of dating.
“To see them together — and I’ve been one of those dudes with one of those fantasy, fantastic relationships where you just go off and get married,” Cannon explained.
Naturally, Cannon gave Davidson his blessing and even offered to officiate the wedding.
“So I was like, ‘Do it.' I’ve congratulated Pete. I haven’t spoken to Ariana, but I’m happy for them," Cannon gushed. "I think they’re outstanding. They’re young people in love and you can’t knock that. It’s like The Notebook. I’m up for all weddings. I’ll officiate. I don’t know how long they’ll last if you let me do it, but I’m up for it."
As far as the Grande and Davidson timeline goes, their relationship has moved rather quickly. Gossip sites caught wind of their relationship around May 18th, and by June 9th they were engaged. However, Refinery29 posits that the two have been dating since April because Davidson did a stand-up show at Kenyon College in Ohio on April 21st, 2018 where he told the audience he wanted to marry his girlfriend. According to first-person reports, it’s unclear if he ever mentioned that girlfriend by name, but people probably assumed it was Cazzie David. In hindsight, many are wondering if he was actually referring to Grande and the two have been together longer than we thought. false
Maybe we’ll never know. For now, congratulations to the happy couple, and we look forward to your future wedding ordained by Nick Cannon.
