For Zazie Beetz, wearing her hair in her natural curls is the norm. Whether on-screen, during her everyday life, or on the red carpet, the Joker and Atlanta star always keeps it interesting and true to herself. The 2020 Oscars, her first-ever Academy Awards, was no exception—and we’re so glad.

“Zazie’s hair for her first Oscars was inspired by Eartha Kitt,” said Beetz’s longtime hairstylist, Lacy Redway. “I wanted to keep the look authentic to Zazie and really showcase her natural texture.”

To do so, Redway only used one hair product: the Nexxus Comb Thru Finishing Mist.

“I wanted her hair to feel light & airy, and have movement,” said Redway of her decision to use one styling product. To get the star’s Oscars hairstyle, she prepped Beetz’s hair the day before, giving her braids to help enhance her natural texture. Then, on the day of the Academy Awards, Redway unraveled the braids and used her hands to massage them before beginning to sectioning Beetz’s hair off.

She then used a small curling iron to curl Beetz’s hair’s tips in different directions and spritzed the Comb Thru Finishing Mist to give her hair a flexible hold. Next, she pinned the star’s hair up in random sections to create its final shape, and then finished by spritzing the Comb Thru Finishing Mist all over to lock in the style.
