If you’re keeping a close eye on the 2018 Oscars, you just saw actress Eva Marie Saint take to the stage — and you may be wondering: Who is Eva Marie Saint? The 93-year-old was there to present for Best Costume Design — which went to Mark Bridges of Phantom Thread — during which she announced, “I’m older than the Academy!” (The Academy is 90 years old!) In addition, Saint took the time to thrill viewers with Hollywood stories — which included a throwback to a rose-covered dress she wore in Hitchcock’s North by Northwest. Oh, and who could forget that Saint referred to Hitchcock as “Fred”?
In case you’re wondering who Saint is, it’s likely you’ve already seen her. She starred in On the Waterfront, for which she won Best Supporting Actress in 1955, alongside the famed Marlon Brando. She also had a role in the 1957 film Raintree County, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift. As mentioned, the acclaimed actress worked with Alfred Hitchcock (aka “Fred”) on the 1959 film North by Northwest, which featured Cary Grant. Hitchcock choose her out of dozens of other candidates.
Can next year’s awards ceremony just be Eva Marie Saint telling Hollywood stories, please?
When Saint won the 1955 award for Best Supporting Actress, she was nine months pregnant with her and husband Jeffrey Hayden’s child. This year, while presenting, Saint mentioned her husband, a director and producer, who passed in 2016. According to Los Angeles Times, they were married for 65 years. “It comes in waves,” Saint told the Times, referring to the memories that have washed over her in the two years since her beloved’s death.
