Conventional wisdom says that watching porn is not a great life choice, especially for guys. It leads to porn addiction or sex addiction and ruins relationships and creates serious problems in real-life sexual encounters. Right? Right?!

Turns out: not so much. A recent article in NY Mag compiled some of the most recent interesting studies about the effects of watching porn on men and couples to show that many of our preconceived notions are super inaccurate—the idea that men become desensitized when they watch a lot of porn, for example.

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Not necessarily the results you were expecting, right? And another study focused on porn viewing by couples yielded similar results. While we’ve been told porn creates unhealthy expectations and relationship strains, researchers “found that couples that watched porn reported higher levels of sexual desire for a partner and had more positive evaluations of their own sexual behavior.” Huh.

The bottom line? Watching porn will always be a (very) complicated issue, because sex and human relationships are complicated, but it definitely doesn’t deserve to be demonized across the board.
