A couple left an angry note instead of a tip for a waitress — all because she has a rainbow tattoo

A waitress in Illinois was collecting a receipt from one of her tables when she discovered that rather than a tip, she received a hateful message about her rainbow tattoo .

“Can’t tip someone who doesn’t love Jesus,” it read. “Bad tatoo [sic].”

The tip-less receipt and hateful note, left at a Buffalo Wild Wings, was a response to the waitress’s tattoo: a rainbow in the shape of the equality sign to support LGBTQ rights. The 20-year-old waitress, named Samantha Heaton, is gay, though she didn’t discuss her sexual orientation when she was serving the family of five.

“I went above and beyond for this couple, and for them to leave that (note) kind of hurt,” Heaton told the Rock River Times. “Like, I have bills to pay too.”

Heaton is also a Christian and was saddened to see such behavior. She expressed concern not just for the LGBTQ community, but also for the children influenced by their parents’ prejudice.

“As a Christian, thou shall not judge,” she said. “No matter how someone looks, you should love them for what’s in their heart and how they treat you. Not for what is on the outside. As someone who came out when it was still a battle for the LGBTQ community, that’s just plain rude and uncalled for. What if one day their kids grow up and want to be with the same sex, are they going to disown them? Throw them on the street?”

Equally stunned, her colleague shared a photo of the tip-less receipt on Facebook to fight back against bigotry. The post has more than 1,000 likes, 600 shares, and 400 comments.

I would just like to say that being gay does NOT MEAN you don't believe in God or Jesus. And people who are "religious"...

Heaton said the incident inspired her to keep fighting for what she believes in.

“Someone asked me the other day if I would go back in time and get the same tattoo,” she said. “And I said, ‘No I would get it bigger.'”

We’re with you, Samantha!
