You would think that in 2017, the old adage “a woman’s place is in the kitchen” would be dead and buried by now. Turns out, it’s not.
UberEats in Bangalore, India posted this very tone-deaf ad copy for its promo on Wife Appreciation Day.
Not only is this problematic for all the obvious reasons, but also because gender inequality and sexism in India is an ongoing and systemic issue that women are constantly battling. Indian women fighting for equality have more on their plate than problematic ad copy, but it’s a shame that the equality battle has to involve a food-delivery app, an area that modern Indian feminists shouldn’t have to worry about at all.
This Twitter user truly hit the nail on the head.
Uber immediately apologized and rectified the situation, but only after the advertisement was published and the backlash was brought to the company’s attention.
Uber’s chief brand officer, Bozoma Saint John, didn’t seem to be aware that the ad existed and was rightfully angered when she saw it.
We’re glad Uber is taking the complaints seriously, but we can’t understand how something like this was approved in the first place. We seriously agree with this tweet:
“Glad they removed it, but something’s REALLY broken when they have to be told that that’s wrong,” wrote one Twitter user.
This news comes after a former Uber engineer, Susan Fowler, opened up about the sexual harassment and discrimination she faced at the company, and the CEO announced a leave of absence after a string of scandals.
