President Donald Trump’s time in office has been marked by dissent across the country (and, really, the world). In the most recent act of protest against the president, Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has been smashed with a pickax.
Los Angeles Police Officer Ray Brown told CNN that a man took a pickax to the star early this morning, July 25th. Hollywood officers apparently got the call at about 3:30 a.m. PT. According to Los Angeles CBS affiliate KCBS, only a hole in the shape of a star was left after the act of vandalism. Later, graffiti was added to the site, and a chin-up bar was then placed on top of it. This is the second time that someone has vandalized Trump’s Walk of Fame star.
Patricia Cox, who reportedly witnessed the incident, told KCBS that she saw the man “going to town on” the star.
The Los Angeles Times writes that 24-year-old Austin Clay turned himself in to the Beverly Hills police headquarters at about 4:30 a.m., claiming that he was responsible for the destruction. Clay was arrested for suspected felony vandalism and is currently in jail with a bail of $20,000.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which is responsible for maintaining the Walk of Fame, condemned the vandalism. Leron Gubler, president and executive of the Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement to USA Today that the “Hollywood Walk of Fame is an institution celebrating the positive contributions of the inductees.”
Twitter, on the other hand, couldn’t help crack some jokes.
Of course, we don’t condone the destruction of public property. But after everything Trump has done in office to further disadvantage women, LGBTQ+ people, and minorities, we admittedly understand Clay’s frustration.
