Trump says he could beat Oprah in 2020
After Oprah gave a poignant speech at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards on January 7th, cries of #OprahforPresident were heard around the internet. And today, January 9th, President Donald Trump responded to the rumors of a challenge from the billionaire, saying that he could beat Oprah in the 2020 battle for the White House.
Trump added that he didn’t think Oprah would actually run.
Rumors of Oprah’s candidacy were fueled when a CNN report on January 8th claimed two unnamed friends of Oprah said she was considering a run. Stedman Graham, Oprah’s partner, also weighed in, telling the Los Angeles Times that “She would absolutely” run for president. And today, one of Oprah’s closest friends, Gayle King, said on CBS This Morning that Oprah was “intrigued” by the idea of running but wasn’t seriously considering it.
But the people of Twitter weren’t so sure that Trump could beat Oprah
And there were those who felt cries of #OprahforPresident were counterproductive.
Oprah herself hasn’t said much about her potential candidacy. But in a backstage interview at the 2018 Golden Globes, she told Bloomberg that she wasn’t planning on entering the race.
Since Oprah is not running for president yet, it’s entirely possible that she never will. And as much as we love Oprah, maybe we should consider the repercussions of celebrities taking the highest political office in the country. But regardless of if Oprah decides to run or not, it’s fun to imagine what a Trump-Winfrey race would look like.
