Living with a chronic illness can not only be physically and mentally exhausting, but also extremely frustrating. People whose day-to-day lives are affected by an illness that may never go away, and are often invisible to those around them, can sometimes have a hard time connecting with those who don’t understand the weight of what they’re going through. To those looking in, people dealing with chronic illnesses seem to be unavailable, or may look like they complain too much — but when you don’t understand the depth or frequency of the pain, that’s an unfair assumption to make. Who would choose to feel sick, never knowing when they will have good and bad days?

It’s a delicate dance — wanting to tell your friends how you feel, but not worry them too much, or push them away by making them think you’re exaggerating. And it’s hard. People with chronic illnesses have to worry not only about how they’ll feel on any given day, but also how they’re going to “look” to their family and friends. So the best thing anyone can do for a loved one with chronic illness is support them, knowing that they’ll likely never understand what their loved ones are going through.

Thankfully, the internet is a great place for those living with a chronic illness to connect with others going through something similar, to know that they aren’t alone. Here are 18 tweets that prove it.
