Ever since HBO announced that True Detective Season 3 was in the works, we’ve been anxiously awaiting our first glimpse of what creator Nic Pizzolatto has in store. Now, the first trailer for the next installment is here, and it looks tense.
HBO released the trailer yesterday, August 26th, before the Sharp Objects finale, giving us our first taste of Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali (from Moonlight and House of Cards) as Arkansas state police detective Wayne Hays. Rolling Stone reports that the action of Season 3 will unfold over the course of several decades, and in the trailer, we see shots of Hays at three different stages of life. Set against the backdrop of the Ozarks, the new season looks haunting.
While we don’t know for sure what the mystery at the heart of the season will be, we do know that it involves two children who go missing in 1980. Carmen Ejogo, most known for her role in Selma, costars as a schoolteacher involved in the case, Amelia Reardon. Also featured in this season will be Mamie Gummer, Stephen Dorff, and Scoot McNairy.
There may be no Yellow King this time, but this season promises to be just as eerie as the first.
According to HBO, Pizzolatto directed the new season along with Jeremy Saulnier, and he also wrote the script (though he co-wrote episode 4 with David Milch). Executive producers include Season 1 cast members Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, along with Season 1 director Cary Joji Fukunaga.
True Detective Season 3 will premiere in January 2019. We can’t wait to know the whole story, and we have a feeling Season 3 may match Season 1 in all its glory (time is a flat circle, after all).
