Remember when Tom Hardy was supposed to have a cameo in The Last Jedi? Well, the deleted scene featuring the Peaky Blinders actor has been unearthed, and it is the most bizarre and amazing thing you’ll watch all day.
Hardy plays a stormtrooper in the delightfully weird scene, which finds Finn (John Boyega), Rose (Kelly Marie Tran), and DJ (Benicio del Toro) infiltrating the First Order base to disable the tracking device keeping the remaining Resistance ships from being able to escape the First Order. As the trio make their way to their destination disguised as First Order officers, they encounter a group of stormtroopers in an elevator — one of whom is Hardy. But Hardy’s not just any stormtrooper, he’s actually 926, an old buddy of Finn’s from camp and he immediately recognizes the stormtrooper-turned-resistance fighter.
But just when it seems like 926 is officially on to them — and Rose is ready to go in for the kill — it appears the stormtrooper isn’t aware of Finn aka FN-2187’s desertion from the First Order. The rather chatty 926 simply reveals that he didn’t think Finn was “officer material.” But at being proven wrong, he excitedly says to his old pal, “Look at you! Y’all did it! Batch Eight, Heigh-Ho!” before giving Finn a congratulatory slap on the butt and letting out a victorious “woooo.”
What kind of wild frat life are these stormtroopers living, and how has Star Wars neglected to explore this further?
The scene is truly so bonkers, but let’s be real — only Tom Hardy could pull it off.
Okay, there was no way this was going to make it into the final cut of the film, but this is so bizarre and charming, and I’m very much going to need a spinoff following the exploits of Batch Eight. I imagine it would be like Animal House meets Top Gun — but in space.
Hardy wasn’t the only celebrity to don the stormtrooper suit for The Last Jedi. Prince William and Prince Harry also made cameos as stormtroopers in the film — although they got a bit unlucky like Hardy: Boyega revealed in December that their cameo had been cut at the last minute. Other celeb cameos in the film included Rogue One director Gareth Edwards, Edgar Wright, and Take That’s Gary Barlow as resistance fighters, Justin Theroux as the master codebreaker, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Slowen Lo.
Batch Eight for life, y’all!
