Apple TV+ just released the first teaser trailer for The Morning Show, starring Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, and Steve Carell, and we can already sense the dark energy emanating from those phony poster smiles. Judging by this video, The Morning Show is Big Little Lies meets The Today Show. And wow, we are so ready.

As Apple TV wrote in the description for the teaser trailer, which dropped on August 12th, The Morning Show is “a high-stakes drama that pulls back the curtain on early morning TV.” In our hearts, the show is the Friends reunion we’ve been waiting for, with Witherspoon playing Rachel Green’s younger sister Jill. But, IRL, the show is loosely based on Brian Stelter’s 2014 nonfiction book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV. As Stelter writes in his book, despite the pleasant banter between anchors, seething tensions hide beneath the surface. When the cameras cut, the drama starts rolling.

We can learn even more with Deadline‘s description of the upcoming Apple+ show.

“It is described as an inside look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning, exploring the unique challenges faced by the women (and men) who carry out this daily televised ritual,” it reports.

With three award-winning actors in leading roles, we have no doubt The Morning Show is going to become our new favorite intense drama.

Since Stelter published his book five years ago, we’ve gotten an even deeper look into the complicated and often dark world of morning television, with the rise of the idea of “fake news,” and Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose departing after sexual harassment allegations. After watching the trailer, some see these real-life counterparts bleeding into the fictional show.

Did we want to catch a glimpse of Reese, Jen, or Steve actually in the trailer for this show? Absolutely. But hey, it’s just a teaser, after all.

Keep your eyes and ears open for news about when The Morning Show drops this fall. Aniston’s return to the small screen? It’s going to be must-see TV, for sure.
