No matter the intention, the reality is that jokes can absolutely cross a line. And recently, some felt that T-Pain crossed that line when he made an awkward joke about his first encounter with musician Taylor Swift. T-Pain hosted the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Awards last night, March 14th, and in his monologue, the “Buy U a Drank” singer described the first time he met Swift.

To be fair, it’s impossible to know what Swift was thinking when T-Pain brought the moment up on live TV. She may have found the scenario funny and was just going along with the bit. However, some fans think she looked pretty uncomfortable.

Many called T-Pain out on Twitter.

Some noted that Swift was recently part of a very public sexual assault trial and felt that the host was making light of it.

And as others pointed out, “joking” about women’s bodies is never okay.

T-Pain has told the story about running into Swift before. In an interview with iHeartRadio before his hosting duties, he said he “fell into her once.” Regardless, maybe we can all take a moment to remember that unsolicited comments about someone else’s body—no matter the reason—usually only serve to make someone feel uncomfortable or, in more extreme cases, unsafe. It’s 2019, and we can do better.
