Everyone wants to know what song Adam Rippon was skating to
Team USA won the bronze in the teams figure skating event yesterday, February 11th. Mirai Nagasu landed a historic triple axel and Adam Rippon floated across the ice, making the sport look easy (fyi: IT’S NOT!). And now, everyone wants to know what song Rippon skated to during the men’s free skate segment, because it was fire.
The backtrack was actually two different songs mashed together to create the dreamy soundscape.
The first was Coldplay’s “O” from their 2014 album Ghost Stories, and the second was “Arrival of the Birds” from Cinematic Orchestra.
According to Billboard, the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics is the first set of Olympic Games where singles and pairs skaters can skate to songs with lyrics. Rippon previously told Billboard that he really wanted to make the most of this amendment to the rules. The Coldplay song Rippon competed to during the team event holds a special significance to him.
He continued, “I had this program two years ago, and life imitates art and I broke my foot. Now when I do the program I think maybe my wing shouldn’t be broken anymore. So now I’m flying through the whole thing. Chris Martin has this voice that resonates through a whole arena.”
Since Rippon took to the ice yesterday, “O” climbed to the #14 spot on the iTunes Top 100 chart.
Cinematic Orchestra’s “Arrival of the Birds” appeared on the soundtrack for The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos and was later featured at the end of the film The Theory of Everything.
Rippon, an Olympic rookie, nailed his dreamy routine and came in third within the five-person event. He definitely inspired us to listen to “O” on repeat for the rest of the day.
