As the caption hints, this woman’s pregnancy was made possible by in vitro fertilization, and the syringes surrounding the child represent all the fertility injections it took to bring this baby girl into the world.

Fertility issues are something we’re just beginning to talk about as a culture, it’s an issue that so many would-be parents wrestle with and it’s critical that we give these people our support by stripping the taboos away from this topic. After all, according to the National Survey of Family Growth,  1 in 8 couples (or 12% of married women) have trouble getting pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy. According to that same study, 7.4 million women, or 11.9% of women have received infertility treatments in their lifetime.

In the last few months, a handful of public figures have come forth to tell their stories about their struggles conceiving. When Mark Zuckerberg announced his wife Priscilla Chan’s pregnancy in August, he also told the world of the several miscarriages they experienced before they finally had a successful pregnancy. This September, in Tyra Banks’ new show FabLife, both Tyra and Chrissy Teigen talked about the difficulties they’ve experienced in their attempts to conceive.

We’re so glad that this is becoming a more open conversation, and we’re glad that Angela shared this picture, which is worth so much more than one thousand words, about what she endured to bring her baby girl into the world.
