Sherlock masterminds Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss may be planning on returning to the hit series for a fifth season in a few years, but if star Martin Freeman has his way, it may be even longer. Because the actor, who currently has a supporting role in Black Panther, revealed that the pressure and hype surrounding Sherlock has sucked the fun out of making it.

Freeman, who won an Emmy playing Sherlock Holmes’ best friend and sidekick Dr. John Watson, revealed in a new interview with The Telegraph that his reluctance to return to Sherlock was, in part, due to the mixed reception the most recent season received. He said of whether there’d been discussions about Season 5, “Not massively. Um…I think after series four [it] felt like a pause. I think we felt we’d done it for a bit now. And part of it, speaking for myself is [due to] the reception of it.”

A modern iteration of the famed Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character, Sherlock debuted in 2010 to relatively immediate acclaim  and spurred a rabid and passionate fan base. Freeman told The Telegraph that because the show was a massive success from the get-go, meeting fan expectations every season has become something of an uphill battle.

Moffat and Gatiss, who created the series and write most episodes — Gatiss also plays Sherlock’s brother Mycroft on the series — are currently working on a modern-day Dracula series for the BBC. The pair recently revealed to the Radio Times that while more Sherlock has largely been on the back-burner as they work on Dracula, they don’t think their time with the iconic detective is up.

Considering it took them almost seven years to release four seasons and a Christmas special, waiting a few years for more from the hit BBC series is an idea we’ve gotten used to.

And while we definitely understand that fan demands and expectations have made the detective series a bit more daunting to film, we’re holding out hope that Freeman will be on board to reunite with Benedict Cumberbatch for another season with time.
