In an alternate universe, Barb Holland never fell victim to the Demogorgon, instead living on to battle a different monster: High school.

The trailer for Shannon Purser’s new Netflix romantic comedy has arrived and it’s clear high school dating is as messy as ever. Sierra Burgess is a Loser stars Purser as the titular teen who begins catfishing a popular jock after a case of mistaken identity.

The trailer follows Sierra, a very uncool high school student looking to carve out her place in the world, whose life is turned upside down when football player Jamey begins texting her…only he thinks he’s talking to Veronica, a popular mean girl. Sierra continues to text Jamey as Veronica, and the two begin to fall for one another, prompting Sierra to enlist the real Veronica for help in exchange for tutoring lessons. Naturally, can only get messy when Sierra’s catfishing plan inevitably goes awry and Jamey learns he’s being deceived.

The rom-com, which is based on the play Cyrano de Bergerac, is giving us A Cinderella Story meets MTV’s Catfish vibes and we are definitely intrigued.

This catfishing nightmare may be a messy situation for Sierra to work her way out of, but honestly, it could be worse. At least she wasn’t briefly accused of murdering Midge Klump during the Riverdale High School production of Carrie: The Musical.

Sierra Burgess is a Loser also stars The Fosters’ Noah Centineo as Jamey, Kristine Froseth as Veronica, and RJ Cyler as Sierra’s best friend Dan. Chrissy Metz, Will Peltz, Alan Ruck, and Lea Thompson also star.

Sierra Burgess is a Loser is set to begin streaming on Netflix on September 7th.
