You have to read Serena Williams' spot-on wedding advice for her BFF, Meghan Markle
Now that Serena Williams is a married lady, she’s ready to dole out advice to other brides-to-be…including one who’s about to join the royal family. In case you didn’t already know, Williams and Meghan Markle have been friends for years, and now Williams is ready to impart some words of wisdom that could help Markle enjoy her wedding to Prince Harry even more than she undoubtedly will.
While talking to Robin Roberts on Good Morning America this week, Williams shared her best advice — and it doesn’t just apply to Markle, either. It goes for anyone who’s planning to get married, it’s that good. So what did Williams learn from her own wedding that she wanted to pass on?
“I just think it’s so important to enjoy the moment,” she said. “And to eat cake.”
Yeah, we’re on board with both of those things. After months (and sometimes years) of planning, the wedding day goes by so fast — you’re surrounded by people you love, it’s an exciting day, and it’s easy to let it fly by and forget to take a breath and just be in the moment. And yes, a lot of people end up missing out on the cake at their own wedding because it becomes such a hectic situation — which is exactly what happened to Williams when she married Alexis Ohanian last year.
“I didn’t get to eat mine at the wedding. We were just having so much fun!” she said. “If I could give her any advice it would be to just enjoy the preparation, enjoy your planning. It all goes so fast.”
Unfortunately, though, it doesn’t sound like Williams will be at that wedding to eat cake with Markle. Although she played it coy when Roberts asked her if she’d be attending, she did say that she’s got a tournament going on at the same time so she’s not sure if she’ll be able to make it.
Whether or not Williams and Markle get to party together on her big day, Williams’ advice is solid — and it shows how much she cares about her friend. We sincerely hope that Markle gets to eat that cake on her first day as a member of the royal family. It’s worth it.
