Scream 5 is a go, and at least one OG cast member is back
While some upcoming film projects are currently on hold due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Scream 5 charges on. The fifth installment of the satire-horror franchise is on the move, and the project just confirmed that David Arquette, who played the lovable Deputy Dewey Riley, is officially involved. Arquette is hopefully the first of many of the original cast members to jump on the Scream 5 bandwagon.
“I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new,” the actor said in a statement, per Collider. “Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.”
This will be the fifth time Arquette has reprised his role of Dewey, as he has been a mainstay in the Scream films since the first movie hit theaters in 1996.
It’s been nearly 10 years since the fourth Scream debuted, and Scream 5 will be the first of the bunch to not be helmed by the late director Wes Craven, who died in 2015. Instead, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett—together known as Radio Silence—will take a crack at the beloved franchise.
Though don’t get nervous that the film may lack original Scream flair. OG Scream writer and co-creator Kevin Williamson is slated to executive produce.
Furthermore, Neve Campbell, who played Sidney Prescott in the four films, is also hinting at a possible return for Scream 5.
“We’re having conversations. I have been approached about it,” Campbell told Rotten Tomatoes in a recent interview. “The timing’s a bit challenging because of COVID. You know, we only started the conversation maybe a month and a half ago…We’re negotiating, so we’ll see.”
She continued, “It’s always fun for me to step back in [Sidney’s] shoes, and it’s always fun for me to see the cast come back and make one of these films again and try to make another good one.”
Fans are also begging for a Hayden Panettiere and Courteney Cox comeback—as well as a comeback of Cox’s absolutely iconic baby bangs.
We’ve never been more excited to be spooked by Ghostface. Let’s hope that if and when our ideal cast is assembled, they all make it out of Scream 5 alive.
