Though celebrities’ opinions aren’t the only ones that matter – after all, we each have a voice that deserves to be heard – they are in the public eye. This means that they have the ability to inform, to educate, and to widely promote topics worthy of our consideration. One such celeb who recently reminded us of this is Scarlett Johansson.

During an interview with Cosmopolitan, the actress candidly spoke about a controversial topic, giving us her own perspective on this matter: Planned Parenthood’s budget being cut. “There are countries at war, there’s terrorism, global warming, and we’re like, ‘We should definitely cut the budget for Planned Parenthood,” stated Scarlett. “Let’s take away the availability of women’s health initiatives!’… It’s nuts.”

Johansson then explains why she feels this way, why Planned Parenthood is both personally important to her and extensively important to all the other women who utilize the organization’s services. “We’re talking about preventing cervical and breast cancers,” asserted Scarlett, revealing, “Growing up, I used [PP’s] services. All my girlfriends did—not just for birth control but for Pap smears and breast exams.”

Not only are resources like Planned Parenthood important for general healthcare, they also help to keep women safe, to keep them healthy, to keep them alive. “You read about the rise of back-alley abortions, women having to mutilate themselves and teenagers having to seek help in unsafe conditions, and for what?!” Johansson asked. “We’re moving backward when we’re supposed to be moving forward.” Though the name “Planned Parenthood” is one that’s tied to debate, that shouldn’t be how we describe the organization. Instead, we must think of all the women PP has helped since its emergence in 1916.

Ultimately, we applaud Scarlett Johansson for speaking on behalf of all women who see the value in a service that allows them to have control over their health.
