In this week’s edition of “Racists Ruin Everything,” both Snapchat and Instagram have removed their Giphy sticker integration features after a racist GIF made its way through content Giphy’s content moderation filters.

The GIFs feature in Snapchat and Instagram Stories is supposed to offer only PG-rated GIFs, keeping it safe for young social media users. Unfortunately, an extremely racist GIF that read “N—- Crime Death Counter — Keep Cranking Bonzo, the Numbers Just Keep on Climbing!” slipped through the cracks on Snapchat, which first disabled the feature. Then, users took to Instagram and found the same GIF, leading the powers-that-be at Instagram to quickly follow suit.

Both social media platforms pressed pause on their integrations with Giphy while an investigation into the racist GIF is underway.

Giphy later released the following statement to TechCrunch in response to the outcry:

Giphy’s community guidelines prohibit any content that displays hate speech, and it appears the GIF search-and-share website is taking the racist GIF breech very seriously.

In the meantime, Twitter mourned the temporary loss of Giphy stickers the only way it knows how.

Here’s hoping Giphy gives the all-clear soon, so we can all get back to posting our Stories without worrying about another racist GIF sneaking through search results.
