This paralyzed woman proved doctors wrong and learned to walk for her wedding
We love hearing inspiring stories, and we love hearing about a gorgeous wedding, so when the two worlds collide it’s hard for us to contain ourselves.
Today we’ve been SO inspired by Jaquie Goncher, who overcame everything to walk down the aisle at her wedding.
In July 2008, Jaquie was involved in a swimming pool accident that left her neck broken and her paralyzed from the neck down.
Speaking to Buzzfeed, Jaquie explained that she sustained a spinal cord injury, shattering part of her vertebrae. Doctors told her mother that she would never walk again. Despite this, Jaquie experienced some movements in her toes just a month after the event.
Cut forward seven years and Jaquie decided that she was going to put her all into regaining her strength in order to walk down the aisle at her wedding.
“I walked on the treadmill at the slowest pace holding onto the sides and focused on not passing out. I would pull myself with my legs in my wheelchair around the gym,” she said to Buzzfeed.
After 12 months of vigorous work, Jaquie found herself not only walking down the aisle, but standing for nearly five hours on her special day!
Just look at her husband’s face as she came down the aisle.
“Walking down the aisle felt like a dream,” Jaquie said. “I felt accomplished and just so grateful and thankful.”
Are you crying too because we’re crying?
That’s not all, however. For a special wedding present, Jaquie’s mother gifted her Maggie Smith Kühn, an artist to create a live portrait of the event.
“Jaquie’s mom hired me to paint the first dance,” Maggie wrote on Imgur. “Jaquie had no idea I would be at the wedding, even though she had hinted that she wished she could hire me. Her reaction at seeing me in the reception space was so awesome, we both cried haha!”
Speaking of first dances, Jaquie and her husband Andy had Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am” for theirs and the picture is just so beautiful.
“The first dance was as powerful as walking down the aisle for everyone,” Maggie recalled. “This was 200 people who love Jaquie and Andy more than anything, and they were all witnessing the culmination of a year’s hard work and hope.”
Doesn’t it just look so perfect? Also, what an amazing and inspiring story.
We wish Jaquie and Andy all the happiness in the world!
