There’s something about watching the best athletes in the world do their thing that is so just so motivational. We’ve been kind of lacking that feeling since the 2018 Winter Olympic Games ended, but this morning, it came back in the form of the 2018 Paralympics. And frankly, this Paralympics commercial is all the inspiration we needed to get up and kick ass today. You just have to watch it!
The 2018 Paralympic Games begin this Friday, March 9th, and if you weren’t already excited, this Toyota Paralympics commercial will definitely have you counting down the hours.
The commercial isn’t brand new — it actually debuted during the 2018 Super Bowl, but it got kind of lost along with all the other ads that appeared on television that night. With the Games just around the corner, we were reminded that this Paralympics commercial exists, and ever since then, we’ve had a hard time coming up with an excuse to procrastinate anything.
The commercial, titled “Good Odds,” tells the story of Canadian Paralympic skier Lauren Woolstencroft. It begins with a video of a nurse lifting up a crying newborn baby who is missing three limbs, and the words, “Odds of winning a gold medal?”
The ad goes on to show shots of a disabled child doing various activities (skiing, ballet, etc.) while statistics pop up on the screen, like “1 in 486,336,204.” It’s basically the story of Woolstencroft’s journey to become a Paralympic skier who has won eight gold medals.
The song “Road To Glory” by Lynn Hilary plays in the background, making the message that much more powerful. At the end, the words “Start your impossible” splash across the screen. Chills!
The ad reminds us that the odds of winning a Paralympic gold medal are almost 1 billion to 1. The statistics, spelled out against Woolstencroft’s tremendous achievements, remind us that the impossible can be possible. While that may sound extremely corny, it doesn’t come off that way. The Paralympics commercial is only 60 seconds long, but it’s genuine enough to make you feel motivated — and maybe even to bring a tear to your eye.
According to Ad Age, the ad is part of Toyota’s “Start Your Impossible” Olympics campaign. We’re just glad it exists, to be honest. Watch it for yourself to see what we mean:
