When it comes to George R.R. Martin, we all pretty much know what to expect. Seven years of watching and obsessing over Game of Thrones has primed us all really well for falling in love with characters only to have to say goodbye to them in the most brutal of ways. (Seriously, the author gives new meaning to the phrase “Kill your darlings” — we’re basically in a love-hate relationship with this dude at this point!) And since Martin has a new TV series, sci-fi horror Nightflyers, we’re preparing ourselves to watch every beloved character die a horrible, gruesome death, like, right away.

But actually, the incredibly bloody first look video for Nightflyers doesn’t do much to convince us that everyone isn’t going to die, so…it’s probably safe to assume that Martin is up to his old tricks with this one. (Ned Stark taught us all a *very valuable* lesson.)

Based on Martin’s novella of the same name, Nightflyers is about eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on an expedition 75 years in the future to the edge of our solar system aboard The Nightflyer — a ship with a small tight-knit crew and a reclusive captain — in the hope of making contact with alien life. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place, they start to question each other…and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought.

Hm, does someone want to echo those same words back to Martin? Because we’re *still waiting* on The Winds of Winter! And while we’re at it…maybe “alive” isn’t the best word choice here???

Nightflyers is set to premiere this fall on Syfy — plenty of time to brace yourselves for those inevitable deaths.
